Institute for Business in Global Society (BiGS)
In 2022, Harvard Business School launched the Institute for Business in Global Society (BiGS) to explore the essential role business can play in addressing global challenges. The planet is rapidly warming, technological changes have raised possibly existential questions, and economic inequality is growing to levels not seen in decades. From across the political spectrum, society is increasingly looking to business leaders to help tackle these challenges, even as critics are decrying the role that firms may have played in creating or exacerbating them.
BiGS brings together a community of practitioners, scholars, and students to examine those areas where business and society interact and occasionally collide, exploring how business can help address society’s greatest challenges.
The Ownership Project (TOP)
How ownership is structured is foundational for any economy: ownership shapes the exchange of goods and services between buyers and sellers, grants access and control over capital and resources, and mediates the governance of economic enterprises. Despite its centrality, the topic of ownership leaves much to be explored.
The Ownership Project explores how structuring ownership of key elements in the economy can help businesses and communities address pressing societal challenges and support human values in the 21st century. Founded in 2024 as part of BiGS at Harvard Business School, The Ownership Project addresses this gap by systematically and comprehensively expanding the theoretical, empirical, and practical study of ownership through collaborations involving scholars, practitioners, and policymakers. The Ownership Project advances its research through cases, events, white papers, and articles in addition to developing course curricula and teaching materials.
